How Did Such a Large Amount of Websites Get Hacked?
Zone-h reports that 8,700 websites were hacked in total in a very short amount of time. Checking the previous defacement reports that SecurityCrewz reported this year, many of the websites that were breached were hacked on Linux servers. What this means is that the hackers managed to gain root access to the servers in question, defacing all of the websites located on the server.

We aren’t 100 percent sure how they got root access to these sites, we believe that they have found a root exploit to overwhelm the newest server kernels. It’s also possible that the servers might be running on outdated, insecure kernels as well.
