What Happened To Nintendo’s Wii And DS?

What Happened To Nintendo’s Wii And DS?

If you were into gaming in the late 2000s and early 2010s, there’s no doubt that you would have played on the iconic game sets of Nintendo. Nintendo blew up in a big way, introducing a sleek and user-friendly designed gaming console and hand-held device to match. The wonderful thing about Nintendo was that you didn’t have to be tech-savvy or versed in the gaming world to enjoy these devices, making them a fun and exciting activity for the whole family.

Enter The Switch

After conquering the gaming world for a good several years, the popular Nintendo Wii and DS consoles took a bit of a hit after the introduction of new gaming systems that were brought to the market in the 2010s, especially when Xbox came out with their improved software. As with any gaming company, Nintendo quickly adapted to the new market of players and introduced its Switch model in 2017.

Nintendo proved to be the iconic gaming brand that every gamer knows and loves, and the release of their Switch surpassed the sales of Wii by 2022. However, Nintendo stans are still claiming that the Switch will never have the same amount of cultural significance as the Wii and DS for a number of reasons.

Although sales for the Switch surpassed the Wii recently, it took a lot longer to get there. The initial release of the Switch in 2017 didn’t have as much of an impact on gaming as the Wii device, and it took a while for Nintendo fans to warm up to the new console. After 2020, the Nintendo Switch became a household name thanks to the release of the game “Animal Crossing” which went viral on social media.

Nintendo Switch grew in popularity during the most unprecedented times when people needed some control and relaxation in their lives. The Switch went viral on social media thanks to the adorable Animal Crossing because the themes were family-friendly, the characters were undeniable cute and the objectives of the game were light-hearted and not too challenging. Animal Crossing embraced the Nintendo world by including beautiful visuals of nature accompanied by the relaxing sound of soothing music.

Gaming Evolution

Gaming technology went through a renaissance in the 2010s, and software went from good to great in a matter of months. What made Nintendo Wii so loved by millions around the world was its user-friendly controls and relaxing games.

While other brands like Xbox and PlayStation focused on hardcore gamers with technical games that were usually centered around violent themes, Nintendo was all about fun and relaxation, much like online blackjack real money games offer. Games like Wii Sports Resort, Mario Cart and Smash Bros and The Legend of Zelda are exclusive to Nintendo and have become so popular that many people will invest in a Nintendo specifically for access. Gamers speculate that these exclusive rights are the main reason Nintendo remains such a legendary console and will never become irrelevant.

The Wii remote controls were revolutionary for gaming and allowed immersive interaction of the Nintendo worlds. Despite Nintendo’s more relaxed approach to the gaming world, it still offers something unique in comparison to other gaming companies. Nintendo is approachable and focuses on the player’s experience instead of hardware.

Although Wii and DS may be vintage devices of the past, the Switch still encompasses everything great about the gaming company and is an absolutely worthwhile purchase if you are longing for that unique playing experience that only Nintendo does.
