Everything You Need To Know About Mobile Number Portability

Have you ever frustrated with your current network service provider? Want to move a better network service provider without changing your present number? Thanks to Mobile Number Portability, you can easily change the service provider within 4-5 days.

What is Mobile Number Portability?

Mobile Number Portability or MNP enables subscribers to retain their mobile number when switching from one network provider to another. This service is also applicable for prepaid customer as well.

Before initiating the MNP process, make sure your current connection active for at least 90 days and your all pending bills are cleared.

Your number will be not usable for about 1 hour during the actual porting process. Also, the mobile service provider keeps you updated about the MNP status via SMS.

Procedure To Port Your Mobile Number

Step 1: First, you need to select the network service provider you wish to port your number to.

Step 2: From your existing number send the following message: PORT <Space> <10 digit mobile number> to TRAI’s central number is 1900.

Step 3: After you send a message, within 5 minutes you will receive UPC (Unique Porting Code) which is remain valid for only 15 days.

Step 4: Visit your nearest operator store or customer service centre of the operator want to shift and tell them you want to port your sim.

Step 5: They will fill the customer acquisition form and porting form with the UPC code receive on your mobile number.

Step 6: Here you need to provide proof of identity (Aadhar card, PAN card), Proof of address (Electricity bill, copy of rent agreement, landline bill) along with passport size photo.

Step 7: You will get a SIM card from the new service provider, once you submit the required documents. Also, you need to pay some charges up to Rs.19 (It depends on the service provider).

Step 8: The process will take up to 4-5 days to complete but if you are from Assam, North East, and Jammu & Kashmir, it may take up to 15 days.

In case if you don’t want to port number then you need to withdraw the porting request within 24 hours after applying. Also, keep in mind you need to stay with new operator minimum of three months. So in these 3 months you can’t able to generate new UPC code.
