How Has Technology Changed The Quality of Music?

It’s interesting to see how music has evolved through the decades. One thing’s for sure, the industry evolves according to its listener’s tastes and society’s whims. Music for us is a form of expression, while for others it’s an escape or a voice. In terms of advancement, music has evolved due to numerous technological breakthroughs.

New listening, musical and recording technology has dictated the way we listen, record and create music. At the turn of the century, some of our base instruments became electronically digitized. The piano, the bass and guitar were given an electronic voice. The proliferation of computer and processors spawned enhanced sounds and computer-generated effects, synths and beats. Music became a melting pot of various genres; different elements were being introduced and made to merge into one seamless record.

Today, it’s not unusual for artists to produce collaborative music with same or different-genre artists. This produces a richer more complex tone. The hit single, ‘Love Ya’, sung by Tanya Nolan and in collaboration with hip hop group Kirko Bangz has been played and enjoyed by thousands of people all over the globe. Although the song debuted just over a week ago, the hits and reception is overwhelmingly positive and has been featured on apps such as Spotify, Amazon and iTunes. These streaming platforms offer high-quality music on a pay-per-song or monthly subscription business model.

Modernization has also played a large part on the production of music. Electronic dance features a changing beat that’s under the DJs control to mix and match with existing tunes. The digital revolution further bolsters the musician’s ability to create artwork via technological means, which overall makes it easier to write, create and produce songs and albums. In concerts, it’s now possible to play tracks and have the artist mouth the lyrics without any loss in quality or realism.
