Brandon Kearns is an Oregon-based transport executive who manages a team responsible for delivering food across four states, and his own disciplined background gives him a personal connection to sports like wrestling. Before his career in logistics, Brandon Kearns Oregon spent more than a decade in the US Army as a staff sergeant, training and leading a battalion fire support platoon at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and overseeing 52 personnel and equipment valued at $46 million. He has earned numerous military honors, including the Bronze Star, good conduct and Army commendation medals, and lifesaving awards for his actions in the field. In his transport role, Brandon Kearns oversees safety, security, scheduling, and customer service across his delivery department. His disciplined military background mirrors the structure, technique, and evolving rules found in the sport of wrestling.

Wrestling is one of the most ancient form of organized athletic combat known to humanity. It bridges the gap between primitive survival methods and the highly regulated competitions of the modern era.

Previously, it served as a fundamental human activity as depicted by prehistoric cave drawings and ancient literary works. Over time, this discipline has transformed from a vital necessity into a global athletic phenomenon.

It features various styles ranging from traditional Olympic bouts to athletic events televised to global audiences. International federations ensure the sport remains safe and structured for athletes at all levels of competition.

Wrestling’s origins are rooted in the dawn of human civilization. During this time, it was a necessary survival method, where humans learned techniques to defend against predators and hunt for food. They learned grappling maneuvers by copying the tactics employed by animals like the bear and tiger. This evolutionary process became the basis for modern attack and counter-attack combat.

Ancient Sumerian evidence dating back about 5,000 years and later Egyptian tomb paintings show early grappling competitions. The Greeks subsequently formalised the sport as part of military training and introduced it to the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC.

Modern wrestling includes several distinct international and regional styles governed by specific technical regulations. These include Greco-Roman, freestyle, and folkstyle.

Greco-Roman wrestling, an Olympic sport, bans holds below the waist. Wrestlers cannot actively use their legs against an opponent in attack or defence, relying more heavily on upper-body control and powerful throws.

Freestyle wrestling permits leg use in both attack and defence. Folkstyle is an American scholastic and collegiate variant. This style emphasises ground control and escaping disadvantageous positions. Weight and age divisions help make competition fairer for athletes.

Athletes compete on specialised foam mats designed to absorb impact and reduce injuries. One primary objective is to achieve a pin by holding an opponent’s shoulders against the mat. This results in immediate victory and ends the match.

If there is no pin, officials award points based on recognised technical actions. In folkstyle wrestling, successful takedowns, escapes from the bottom, and near-fall situations earn points. These points can determine the winner if the match reaches the end of the regulation period without a pin.

Three officials supervise international matches and enforce strict safety rules. They prohibit dangerous moves such as hair pulling, choking, and dangerous joint manipulation. Updated rules encourage active wrestling and penalise passive competitors who avoid engagement to protect a lead.

While amateur wrestling focuses on pure athletics, a separate professional variant meant for entertainment exists. It began in 1830 when French traveling circus promoters began organizing events where strongmen performed choreographed matches for paying audiences. These matches had arranged outcomes and used theatrical personas to increase audience interest.

Out of this variant grew enterprises such as World Wrestling Entertainment. WWE organises events that blend high-level athleticism with complex scripted storylines and characters. Physical performance and athletic skill help captivate spectators.

Wrestling continues to evolve by becoming more inclusive and serving as a foundation for other sports. In 2004, women’s freestyle wrestling became an official Olympic discipline, reflecting a growing commitment to gender equality within international sport. Wrestling is also recognised as an effective base for success in mixed martial arts.

In 2013, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that it would remove wrestling as a core sport for the upcoming 2016 Olympics due to complaints that it was dull. However, after backlash, institutional changes were made to make the sport more entertaining, helping defend its Olympic status.

Future growth involves reaching new fans through digital media platforms and grassroots youth programs.
