Skin is your biggest organ, although it’s rarely thought of as such. It’s both incredibly robust and fragile at the same time, and whilst it does a good job of keeping our organs safe and secure, sometimes it requires a helping hand.
Skincare, like anything cosmetic, goes through phases and often changes as quickly as the wind. Around the world, skincare changes drastically. Whilst we rely on chemicals and artificial treatments in the west, head further east and you’ll see more herbal remedies coming into play. No one s right or wrong, but there are definitely things to be learned from different cultures regarding looking after our skin.
If you’re looking for new ways to manage your skin, or if you have a particular problem that you can’t seem to fix, here are some skincare hacks from all around the world that you can take note of and try for yourself.
1. Jamu
Jamu is a herbal medicine and originates in Indonesia. Whilst many people associate charities with Indonesia due to the large number of natural disasters, one thing has stood the test of time and that’s its historical and cultural traditions, including Jamu. Comprised of various roots, bark, honey, fruits and flowers, Jamu is often mass produced and easy to get down by dissolving sachets in water or taking a capsule alongside other daily vitamins.
Jamu is said to have been used by royalty to keep them young and beautiful, but it is also cited as having many other benefits, including boosting the immune system. It’s said the herbs regulate hormones, helping the skin to retain its collagen and remain taut and smooth. If you’re not in Indonesia you won’t be able to make it, but you can source it online.
2. Turmeric
For centuries, women in India have relied on Turmeric to keep their skin looking radiant and beautiful. The antioxidants in turmeric are responsible for the glow, and they’re helped along by the natural anti-inflammatory properties.
There are several ways it can be adapted to suit different skin types, including by adding yoghurt for acne prone skin and lemon juice for oily skin. Whatever way you use it, make sure you don’t use more than half a teaspoon because of the bright orange color which has a tendency to stain the skin. If you don’t want to create a turmeric treatment yourself, there are countless versions of skincare products on the market from big brands like The Body Shop and Khel’s.
3. Orange Juice
Many of us drink orange juice and associate it with vitamin C and a strong immune system, but women in Costa Rica have been using it for years as part of their skincare routine. Mostly known for its beautiful beaches and biodiverse jungles, Costa Rica has more to offer the world than just stunning scenery with this skincare hack!
According to Costa Ricans, if you mix orange juice and water in equal measure and dab it onto the skin with a cotton ball, your pores should appear smaller. We all love smaller pores because they make skin look clearer, smoother and more youthful, and this could be a great way to reduce the size. Paired with regular exfoliation, orange juice could be the answer to your prayers! Just make sure you thoroughly rinse your face, otherwise it will be sticky and unpleasant.
